Finley River School Video Takes 1st in National Competition

When students in Ozark’s Finley River School business class created a video for a class assignment last school year, they had no idea it would turn into first place recognition in a national competition. 

“As the class made the video we realized what a reach this could have,” said business and English teacher Kate Stine. “The teachers ended up using it in a presentation at the Missouri Alternative Education Network Conference in July and were strongly encouraged to enter it in a competition at the national level.” 

Stine said the video assignment was part of a public relations unit used to inform and educate the community about FRS, which is the Ozark School District’s alternative school. 

Shot and edited by 2019 FRS graduate Haedon Nichols, the video is called “The Finley Flow” and explains how FRS is designed to engage, equip and enrich its students. In the video, FRS students also share why “Finley works for me.”

“We are passionate about what we do and enjoy highlighting the unique qualities of our program,” science and government teacher Ryan McClain said. 

The video contest for the National Alternative Education Association was open to middle school and high school students who attend alternative education programs. 

“The Finley Flow” beat out other schools from across the nation, including Tampa, Florida, second place; Owosso, Michigan, third place; and Peoria, Arizona, honorable mention.

“I’m so proud of all of our students, past and present,” Stine said. “These students teach me daily about adversity and resilience and what it looks like to thrive in safety and security. This video is a little glimpse into our Finley River School family.”
