North 3rd Graders Open for Business

The cafeteria at North Elementary was abuzz May 15, but not with children eating. Instead, third graders were opening their businesses for the culmination of a three-week economics unit.

Students learned about supply and demand, needs and wants, and goods and services before starting their own business. Face painting, friendship bracelets, massages, fidget spinners, doodles, French lessons and a photo booth were just a few of the goods and services students offered to teachers, parents and other students.

“Students had to brainstorm all the supplies they would need. They had to make an advertisement, an open and close sign and practice a sales pitch,” teacher Jacqui Morgan said. “Now they really understand the process that you go through to manufacture something.”

After learning about economics, North third graders opened their own stores.
