Kindergarten Screening Registration Open
Is my child ready for kindergarten?
It’s a question Ozark School District elementary school secretaries and principals get asked a lot this time of year. That’s because registration for kindergarten screenings is under way, and sending your child off to school for the first time can be scary.
“One of the most common questions is, ‘Is my child ready?’ And there’s no magic answer,” West Elementary School Principal Sharon Underwood said. “We don’t expect them all to come ready. We’re going to teach them where they are and take them to the next step. So, when a parent asks me if their child is ready to start kindergarten, I tell them ‘absolutely.’”
Children learn and develop — academically, socially and physically — at different paces. That’s why having your child participate in kindergarten screening is so important.
“It’s a fun day for the kids because they get to interact with the kindergarten staff and play some games,” North Elementary Principal Karen Hood said. “We make it a relaxed, low-key day.”
Kindergarten screening is an evaluation of various skills to see where your child is developmentally. Children have the opportunity to interact with the kindergarten staff and play games that assess their fine and gross motor skills, as well as their language and concept skills. Once the screening is complete, a staff member will review the results with the parent and answer questions.
The information obtained during the screening, which typically lasts 1-2 hours, is valuable for the parent and the school.
“We use the screening information to make our class lists. You want a good variety of students in the classroom and that information is helpful to our kindergarten teachers,” Hood said. “Through screening, our teachers know a lot about their students before they ever walk through the door.”
Kindergarten screening is open to any child in Ozark School District who will be 5 years old on or before July 31, 2019. At the screening, parents will receive information on Summer School as well as a special kindergarten open house.
