Ozark FFA Horse Judging Team Named State Champs
The 91st Missouri FFA Convention April 25-26 brought big success for the Ozark High School FFA Chapter, as Ozark brought home a state championship and a third place in team divisions, along with two students receiving individual awards.
Out of 47 teams, the Ozark FFA team consisting of Haze Wright, Keetan Stutesmun, Tyler Albright and Bailey Clement won the horse evaluation and selection career development event. Individually, Wright placed first, Stutesman placed third, Albright placed sixth and Clement placed 13th out of 176 participants.
Contestants evaluated five classes of horses for performance and conformation and presented oral reasons on two of the five classes judged. In addition, the students competed as a team in a problem-solving activity over equine science selection, management and production. Through this event, students become acquainted with current market and industry trends.
Ozark also placed third in the dairy cattle evaluation career development event out of 60 teams. The team members were Alexis Orthelious, Allie Barks, Taylor Denief and Hallory Parks. Individually, Orthelious placed fourth, Barks placed fifth, Denief placed 66th and Parks placed 181st out of 229 participants.
Individuals in this event are scored based on how well they apply dairy cattle evaluation skills learned in the classroom. Each team evaluates five classes of four dairy cattle and presents oral reasons for their evaluations.
The Missouri FFA Association also recognized Ozark’s Dakota Heidt as the Area 12 Star Farmer and Ozark’s Bailey Clement as the Area 12 Star.
Area Star Farmers are chosen based upon outstanding production agriculture in the student’s supervised agricultural experience program and active participation in FFA. Area Stars in Placement are selected based upon outstanding achievement in work experience in an agricultural business as a part of a student’s supervised agricultural experience program and active participation in FFA. Area 12 includes 21 Chapters in the Southwest District. The Ozark FFA Chapter advisors are Travis Phipps, Jeremy Sisco and Heath Wright.
