OHS, OJH Cheer Squads Named Regional Champs
Jan. 30 was an exciting day for the Ozark Cheer Program as the Ozark High School varsity squad and the Junior High cheer team were both named Regional champions in their respective divisions.
"These girls have worked so hard to accomplish this Regional title,” said OHS Cheerleading Coach Tess Keller. “It's not the first time our program has placed first in this competition, but there is something that makes this win feel extra special for us this season.”
The Ozark cheer squads competed in the MCCA Kansas City Regional virtual competition. Teams had to perform a routine based on various elements of cheerleading skills and submit a video by Jan. 16. The challenge of this school year made the win all the more sweet.
“I am extremely proud of my cheerleaders,” OJH Cheerleading Coach Trista Hilton said. “As a team we had to overcome obstacles this year that we have never had to deal with before. My girls were able to push through together as a team and fill in for others when they were unable to be at practice.”
Winning the Regional competition qualifies the varsity team to compete for State. That video is due Feb. 15 with awards announced Feb. 28. Varsity is also preparing to compete for a National title after taking first place in the Show Me Regional qualifier in November. The National competition is slated April 23-25.
“We have an exceptional group of athletes this year and they are doing whatever it takes to accomplish their goals, one competition at a time,” Keller said. “We are ready for State!"
Regional is the end of the competitive season for the OJH team. Hilton said she is not only thankful for the dedication of her OJH cheerleaders, but of the OHS cheerleaders and coaches.
“They were all very encouraging and motivational to myself and my team. That uplifted my girls in such a positive way,” Hilton said. “With all of us working together, and continually encouraging each other, I believe that the future of Ozark cheerleading will continue to shine bright and thrive!”
