Partnership in Action: Lowe’s Updates OMS/North Outdoor Classroom
To the east of Ozark Middle School and to the south of North Elementary sits a beautiful secret that many Ozark residents don’t know about — multiple outdoor classrooms nestled among trees, wildlife and a peaceful trail. This fall, that outdoor space got an update, thanks to the Lowe’s Hero Project.
“We are very thankful for Lowe’s generosity and partnership,” OMS Principal Jared Lotz said. “Like anything, there's a need for upkeep and maintenance, which can be a challenge in our outdoor classroom. Through Lowe’s work and partnership, they did a total remodel and update of our outdoor classroom, which was much needed.”
Ozark Lowe’s, along with Springfield’s Primrose location, combined their annual Hero Project funding to update the outdoor classroom. Dozens of Lowe’s employees, sporting their signature red and blue vests, were on site Oct. 21 cleaning up the space, installing new picnic tables, and spreading mulch.
Lotz said he is thankful for their time, hard work and commitment to making Ozark Schools a great place to learn and grow. And on nice days, he looks forward to seeing classrooms go outside and utilize the space.
Lotz said science classes use the outdoor classroom for activities and nature units, while English and language arts classes use the outdoor seating for a tranquil location for writing prompts and cozy places to read books. Outdoor recreation has used the space for a trail running unit and Summer School classes often use it for outdoor survival lessons.
